History

Marmora Mine

Bethlehem Steel Mills of New York discovered a magnetite ore body in Marmora, Ontario, in 1948 via a government aeromagnetic survey.

The mine site was developed between 1951 and 1953 which included the stripping of 120 feet of limestone overburden.

The first shipment of iron ore pellets commenced in 1955.

The iron ore containing magnetite was crushed and ground, and magnetically separated to produce 65% iron concentrate and roasted at 2400F.

Each day, one ore train of 30 - 35 cars delivered iron ore pellets to the Picton port for loading into 25000 MT ore ships destined for the Bethlehem Steel Company plant in Lackawanna NY via the Welland Canal.

Annual plant production was 520,000 MT.

The Marmora mine was expected to operate for >50 years.

On June 29, 1973 the Belleville Intelligencer published an article stating the Marmoraton is "The biggest hole in Hastings County and also the richest, and declared the iron mineral to be "the staple of Canada's economy".

In the late 1970's, iron production significantly decreased due to a sluggish economy, runaway inflation and a decrease in world demand for steel.

In March 1978, the Marmora Mine closure was finalized resulting in the loss of over 300 jobs in the mine and at the Picton loading dock.

At the Picton dock, the train cars were run out over an 800 foot trestle where the pellets were dumped into a storage pit 30 feet deep, excavated from the solid rock.

The Shiploader pit has live storage space for 25000MT of pellets (or bulk product).

Space was also available for storing 330,000 MT of pellets on the ground during winter when the Welland Canal is closed.

Crane service was provided for transferring pellets from the Shiploader pit to ground storage.

The pellets were drawn from the Shiploader pit through 25 chute gates in the roof of the recovery tunnel running underneath the Shiploader pit.

The chute gates were operated manually and discharged on a 42 inch belt conveyor under the chutes.

Today, we use computer cameras in the recovery tunnel to monitor product flow, and the chute gates are operated from the Control Tower.

The conveyor operates at 500 ft per minute with a capacity of 1000 MT per hour.

PT Ship loader conveyor chute

It discharges to a second conveyor running 90 degrees toward the vessel.

That conveyor discharges pellets/bulk product to a third conveyor mounted on a retractable loading tower, the boom of which can be raised/lowered for loading the pellets/product into ships/barges.

The retractable loading tower is designed to permit loading and trimming of vessels of different beams.

The boom can be raised/lowered to minimize the free drop of pellets/product into the vessel.

A 16000MT ore carrier was loaded in approx 10 hours. (During the Amherst Island Wind Farm project, the Shiploader loaded approx 500,000 MT of aggregate onto barges for island road construction over 18 months).

A 1200 foot dock supported on steel piling with a 240 foot loading section was constructed to accommodate Great Lakes vessels in the 1950's (since 2015, the dock has been improved to accommodate all vessel types).

During winter months, incoming pellets were stockpiled.

A brick building was built to house the port office and shop. The building has been renovated and remains in use as the only building at Picton Terminals.

Picton Terminals by Doornekamp 2015

In 2015, Doornekamp purchased the disused port and immediately began redevelopment of the site to diversify port services and products.

After 40 years of bulk road salt storage, Picton Terminals inherited environmental issues.

A unique Picton Terminals Covered Dry Storage Bin for road salt, was designed. Construction is underway.

Road salt is not on site during the construction phase of the Covered Dry Storage Bin for road salt.

Picton Terminals is certified by Green Marine, a voluntary environmental certification program for the North American marine industry which is a rigorous, transparent and inclusive initiative that addresses key environmental issues through 14 performance indicators.

Doornekamp has completed the WSIB Health and Safety Excellence program.

  • Green Marine

    Green Marine Certification

Picton Terminals is committed to conducting its operations in a sustainable manner. The terminal operator signed on as a Green Marine participant in 2021.

Green Marine is an environmental certification program for the North American marine industry dedicated to advancing environmental excellence. The program stems from a voluntary initiative by the maritime industry to exceed regulatory requirements. Green Marine is a rigorous, transparent and inclusive program that targets prioritized environmental issues such as greenhouse gases, community impacts, and water and land pollution.

To date, more than 150 ship owners, port authorities, terminals and shipyards from one ocean to the other in the United States and Canada participate in the program. The cornerstone of the Green Marine initiative is its far-reaching environmental program, which makes it possible for any marine company operating in Canada or the U.S. to reduce its environmental footprint by undertaking concrete and measurable actions.

To receive their certification, participants must benchmark their annual environmental performance through the program’s exhaustive self-evaluation guides, have their results verified by an accredited external verifier and agree to publication of their individual results.

The Green Marine program derives its uniqueness from the support it receives from environmental organizations and government agencies. These approximately 85 supporters contribute to shaping and revising the program.

The annual results are published in Green Marine’s Annual performance report, at the beginning of June every year, and posted on Green Marine website.

  • WSIB Health & Safety Excellence Program

WSIB Health & Safety Excellent Program

The Health and Safety Excellence program was built in 2019 with an advisory committee of WSIB representatives, service delivery providers and the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development Prevention Office.

The program helps businesses improve their workplace health and safety – the program starts from awareness or knowledge of basic health and safety requirements and builds to excellence, such as meeting a recognized national or international health and safety standard.

Businesses that implement program topics can improve their health and safety performance by creating a safer workplace, which can result in lower workplace injury and illness rates and reduced WSIB premiums. You can also earn rebates and recognition for your investments in health and safety.
